Kyiv endures one of the most brutal waves of missile and drone attacks since the full-scale invasion broke out; and we meet Ross, my Ukrainian reporting partner.
Thank you, Tim, for your great reporting! It's important to hear the human side of the war, and the very real fears of Ukrainians beyond the immediacy of the war. I had forgotten about the corruption issue, but it's another reminder that democracy and the rule of law are fragile and very much dependent on adherence by those in power and by those who can hold them accountable. . . Stay safe!
Thank you for the in-depth reporting, from the elephant to the poor kid who’s unable to “chill.” And I’m sure I would’ve dropped more than one F bomb. Sending all the “stay safe” vibes I can to you, Ross, and all Ukranians.
Good to hear that 29 year olds still enjoy good music (i.e. Led Zeppelin, Stones, Hendrix). I imagine Pink Floyd would also be on this list, but with Roger Water's public position on Ukraine I doubt that Ross is much of a fan of his political messaging. What do Ukrainians feel about the "settle for peace and give up land" vs. "Ukraine must win" positions? Are they leaning one way more than the other at this point?
Tim - I can’t say I read much war reporting before finding you on Twitter (and then following you here). Thank you for keeping this war top of mind and finding new perspectives to share with us. I’ve especially enjoyed the individual human perspective that brings it all closer to home. On a separate note, as a Chinese American, it brings me so much pride seeing someone who looks like me finding success in journalism. I’ll be wishing for safe nights for you, Ross and everyone else in Ukraine from here in California.
Tim, excellent writing and wonderful color and humor, so needed, I’m sure, in such devastating times and surroundings. Ross sounds like a gem. Ukrainians and all those like you there on the ground, including the animals, are constantly on my mind with hopes of safety and peace.🇺🇦
TY, Tim! The sound bit is very much appreciated; it makes one to understand the horror and scariness even more. Our friends in Kyiv also told us about it and said “this was the loudest ever - the children were scared as we hunkered down in the corridor. Looking out it was beyond terrifying but also oddly beautiful at the same time” (air defense taking out the missiles)
The words alone conveyed the situation but hearing it conveys the fear and horror everyone so much more.
Please stay safe & I hope Pho is soon to be found 🍜
P.S.: OJ on cornflakes? Not to yuck the yum but that is definitively a very unique combo
I strongly recommend everyone on this Substack to try OJ wit cereals. Cause you never know. I was quite surprised. Life is short, so have to try new things.
I opened on line and not the app! That worked for me. I run Chrome. Tim, I am so glad I found your reporting. Been following you on Twitter for quite a while and was sad to see you leave NPR (my son works for them now-not a reporter!). Your reporting is so real. Thank you, and stay safe!!
Please tell Georgy for me, that Art - any Art is of prime importance. My hobby of embroidery has kept me sane through poor health, caregiving and daily stresses too many to mention. Art keeps the soul alive. For me it is almost life itself.
Nice to meet Ross! Thank you Tim, for your reporting. The supporters of UKR (governmental and not) must stick around after victory to help rebuild. Restoring the built landscape and the economy is critical, otherwise people won't come back.
And Georgy, I beg to differ - I think art is even more important to people in times like these. Based on my online friends in Ukraine, and what they share, I think most of them would agree.
I'm with Ross re: OJ on cereal - as long as it's not a sugary cereal. I had 4 years of college breakfasts of OJ on cheerios due to participation in Morning Choir (milk is a bad idea prior to singing) - and I'll still choose it every once in a while. Not as healthy (milk + cereal = complete protein due to dairy + grain) but as long as you like OJ, it's a tasty choice!
Tim, so appreciate your reporting today about everything going on. If you see or hear of anyway we can help, please let us know. It’s hard to be sitting here, and not want to do something. Good to get to know Ross, give him my best. Animal and Pho lover here. Stay safe, both of you.
I'm not having any trouble at all with the videos on the app on my iPhone. I didn't realize there was an elephant video until I tapped on it to try and enlarge it.

Tim, wonderful reporting! I can’t play any of the videos!! Keep the reporting coming but please stay safe!!

Thanks Tim. Ross is cool. No matter how he insults his corn flakes.
I also had trouble playing the vids. But the writing and the stills were solid. You are amazing.
